The Festival Sermons of Dr. Martin Luther

The festival sermons of Dr. Martin Luther are a part of the Church Postil of Dr. Martin Luther, a collection of his sermons from the early 1520's. The major 2 parts of the four part collection have been translated earlier this century and are available in the 8 volume set from Baker Publishing, translated by Lenker. Lenker gives us the sermons based on the Epistles and Gospels of the historic lectionary appointed for Sunday.

Lenker tells us in his forward that although the sermons of the Postil of Martin Luther were preached early in the Reformation, the Postil was continually worked upon under the supervision of Luther until even the last years of his life. In 1546 it was offered again after being edited by Creutiger and Luther. The translations that are offered here were taken from the 1584 text which was published in Wittenberg.

Nicodemus' reason and accomplishments are to give way to the second birth given by Christ. He explains this second birth and why reason oppposes it. Luthera condemns idolatry in connection with cross remnant and images of the saints and exhorts us to find our cross in self denial and the confession of Christ before the world.

The Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul - June 29 - (Contains two sermons and a note from Luther addressing accusations from Leipzig. Both sermons stress the nesessity of conversion for a true confession and faith in Christ.
